FOREWORD
If you're anything like me, and I have to assume you are if you have or are considering purchasing this little coloring book, you are experiencing a wide range of emotions with regard to the recent general election: fear, anger, fear, resentment, fear, frustration, fear, astonishment, fear, disappointment, fear, grief, fear, anxiety, fear, disillusionment, fear, despair, fear, and... Well, I'm sure you understand.
If he-who-must-not-be-named's campaign and his two weeks as president-elect are any indication of times to come, we have a monumental amount of work to do just to maintain the rights and privileges we enjoy today. All of us. There can be no liberal bystanders. We must all participate if we are to reclaim our country. It's no longer a matter of Left or Right, Democrat or Republican. It's now literally a matter of freedom or oppression and, for many, a matter of personal safety.
Racists and bigots who have dwelled for decades in darkness now feel emboldened by the rhetoric of the president-elect and those he chooses as his advisors. Assaults on Muslims, the LGBTQ community, people of color, Jews, those with disabilities, and other marginalized demographics are in the news every day. We have very valid reasons to be afraid.
So, why am I spending my time on a coloring book when there's so much else to do? Because if we don't take care of ourselves, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, we will not have the strength required to fight the forces arrayed against us.
In the days following the election, coloring was my escape from the media and from people who voted for a thin-skinned, misogynistic, racist, demagogue. Coloring enabled me to splash my life with bold, bright colors at a time when I felt like Dementors were closing in on me and others for whom I care deeply.
So, I hope this book provides you some of the same respite. I hope it strengthens your resolve and bolsters your courage, like a Patronus. We need you to be a part of the resistance. We need you to use your talents, whatever they may be, to ensure that tomorrow is a better day. There are people organizing all over the country. Get involved, even at the local level. Write and call your local, state, and federal officials. Make your voice heard. Be a squeaky wheel, so to speak.
And do please wear a safety pin on your lapel. If it makes even one person feel a little bit less alone, it's worth it. If it prevents an assault, whether verbal or physical, it's doubly worth it. We are all Dumbledore's Army now.
To further the cause, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to MoveOn.org
Namaste,
~ Debi
